Discussion paper on the Scottish 2011 national Census
This is a discussion paper setting out the Equality Network's position that a question on sexual orientation should be included in the next Scottish national census in 2011.
The national census is held every ten years, and is the responsibility of the Scottish Government. The census asks a range of questions of everyone resident in Scotland. Census data about individuals is kept confidential for 100 years, but statistical data is made available. In the 2001 census, there were questions on people's gender, race, nationality, disability, age and religion. The Equality Network believes that a (non-compulsory) question on sexual orientation should also be included, to provide statistical data that would enable better delivery of LGB equality.
Attached below is a discussion paper setting out the background and the reasons for our position.
