Consultation response on criminal trial verdicts
This is the Equality Network's short response to Michael McMahon's consultation on proposals to change the verdicts available in criminal trials.
At present in Scotland, the verdict in a criminal trial can be guilty, not guilty or not proven. There has been some criticism of the not proven verdict. Michael McMahon, Labour MSP for Hamilton North and Bellshill, consulted on a proposed bill to change the criminal justice system so that there are only two verdicts. His suggestion is that these would be proven and not proven.
