Evidence on the draft Human Tissue and Embryos Bill
This is the evidence that the Equality Network submitted to the Westminster Parliamentary Committee examining the UK Government's draft Human Tissue and Embryos Bill.
In May 2007, the UK Government published proposals for changes to fertility law. The current proposals are very good for LGBT people - they would remove all the existing sexual orientation discrimination in this area of the law. The proposals are in the draft Human Tissue and Embryos Bill. The Westminster Parliament has established a joint Committee of the Commons and Lords to consider the draft bill. The Committee asked people to submit comments on the draft bill, and the Equality Network's comments are attached below, together with a briefing explaining the changes that the draft bill will make that will benefit LGBT people.
The Committee will publish a report on what they think of the draft bill by July 25th. After considering that report, the UK Government will probably introduce the real bill into the Westminster Parliament later this year, and it might become law sometime in 2008.
