June turned to face me through the columns of water. I looked down at the brimming river, up at the unrelenting rain, across at June's rinsed eyes. "At least we won't meet any icebergs en route," she said, and hummed a phrase from the Titanic.

"You're on, June. We'll kayak out of here. Just let me move your parcels from the front seat and bale some gallons." I did. I battened down every bit of gear in #1. Then I helped June aboard, climbed in myself, took up the one remaining paddle with "Untie the painter, partner. And watch for snags through the fog. Talk to me - keep me awake. We're in cahoots, you know."
