Kent Police: essay competition for LGBT History Month
The Kent police force is organising an essay competition for secondary school students to increase awareness about diversity. Ann Widdecombe and various tabloid columnists have said they believe it is not the job of the police to organise essay competitions. "I would have thought the police had other things to worry about, like catching burglars." However, police forces in cities as diverse as
Los Angeles and
New Delhi have run essay competitions with considerable success. (

Ireland: response to "Supporting LGBT Lives"
Quentin Fottrell writes in the Irish Times: "It is disturbing but not surprising that almost one-fifth of gay people have attempted suicide. ... Few people think of themselves as homophobic. But we can start by asking what we all can do to help? Parents can tell their children early: 'Gay or straight, I love you. As long as you are happy, I am happy.' We can take notice if a brother, sister, friend or child is isolating themselves, which could be just one of many signs." (

US: Iraq veteran discharged for kissing a woman in Wal-Mart
The Kansas Army National Guard has, for the first time since 1994, discharged a soldier under the federal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. Amy Brian, who served nine years in the Guard, including a stint in Iraq, was discharged for homosexuality after a civilian co-worker told military authorities Amy Brian had kissed a woman in a Wal-Mart checkout line. (

Women are discharged at a rate disproportionate to their presence in the military, according to a report by the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. Amy Brian said: "Everyone I went with (to Iraq) knew I was gay, and no one had a problem with it." (

On 9th January, the new administration's press secretary answered a question about if Obama'a administration's plans to get rid of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell. "You don't hear politicians give a one-word answer much. But it's 'Yes.'" However, the Pentagon say that no request has been made by the incoming administration and no studies have been set in place to consider the impact of allowing LGBT people to serve openly. (

US: Same-sex marriage recognised in New Jersey
A New Jersey Superior Court judge has ruled that her court would exercise jurisdiction over a petition seeking a divorce from a marriage contracted in Canada, between a same-sex couple. The judge relied on the traditional principles of New Jersey marriage recognition law dating back to the 1800s, which provides that a marriage lawful where it was contracted will be recognized in New Jersey as long as doing so does not violate the state's public policy.
