National LGBT Conference volunteer
This year's annual Equality Network conference is planned to take place in Dundee, on Saturday 14th November 2009. The theme is “Hearts and Minds: Reducing Prejudice”. We are looking for a volunteer who will make targeted mailings to organisations and groups to publicise the conference, with follow-up phone calls, and track the registrations received. Other administrative work connected with the conference may also be required. This opportunity provides office experience and direct involvement with a notable annual event in LGBT equality. The conference is attended by individuals and by representatives from groups, statutory bodies such as the NHS and the police, local and national government, and businesses.

Petition for an apology to Alan Turing
Alan Turing was the greatest computer scientist ever born in Britain. He laid the foundations of computing, helped break the Nazi Enigma code and told us how to tell whether a machine could think. He was also gay. He was prosecuted for being gay, chemically castrated as a 'cure', and took his own life, aged 41. The British Government should apologize to Alan Turing for his treatment and recognize that his work created much of the world we live in and saved us from Nazi Germany. And an apology would recognise the tragic consequences of prejudice that ended this man's life and career.

ILGA asks for donations
We received this e-mail from ILGA: "We are writing to you because ILGA is facing serious financial difficulties and ILGA needs your help. .... Today, 80 countries around the world consider homosexuality illegal; five of them and regions of 2 others punish homosexual acts with death. Advances are being made in some countries such as the recent New Delhi Court case which struck down the colonial homophobic law or gaining marriage rights in Norway, Sweden and a small but growing number of states in the USA. Many countries in Latin America have abolished homophobic laws and are adopting new ones to protect the rights of LGBTI people."

EU: Anti-Discrimination Directive postponed
The introduction of the Anti-Discrimination Directive may have to be postponed because of opposition from five EU countries, Germany, Poland, Italy, the Czech Republic and Malta, even after it was approved by the European Parliament last April. The directive is intended to reduce discrimination on grounds of religion or belief, age, disability or sexual orientation, whether direct or indirect, and whether based on real or presumed criteria. Acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed hailed the new directive, saying discrimination should have long been outlawed in the EU. (
