A straight teacher who took early retirement told a tribunal yesterday that pupils at Denny High School, Stirlingshire, Scotland, subjected him to crude and offensive comments suggesting he was gay. He said he "hates" kids because of what happened to him, after they called him names including "perv", "gay", "poof", and "weirdo". (

Another Islington register claims conscientious objection to civil partnership
Theresa Davies claims her religious opposition to civil partnership meant she was reassigned to work as a receptionist and eventually led to her leaving her job. Like her former colleague Lillian Ladele, her appeal to the employment tribunal is funded by the Christian Legal Centre. The MP for Islington, Lynne Featherstone, says: “On the execution of public duty, it is important that we make it clear here and now that carrying out public services cannot be a matter of conscience.” (

Sir Ian McKellen: Come out, come out, wherever you are
"I didn’t come out until I was 49. I had been living a pretty open life, and everyone knew apart from close family. Before I came out, if a newspaper asked me about getting married, I’d say that I hadn’t met the right person yet. But Section 28 changed me. That’s when I made the connection between the personal and the political." (

France: Civil partnership not recognised
Following the announcement of a change in law that would allow civil partners living in France to have their relationship recognised by the civic authorities as a pacte civil de solidarité (known as the PACS) a Network supporter made direct inquiries of the French Inland Revenue, and got replies indicating that the new legal recognition of civil partnerships will not cover inheritance tax. The campaign to change the law began last year when a man, who had been in a legally registered civil partnership but whose life partner died, found that France required him to pay 60% inheritance tax on the property they had jointly owned. A PACS is fully recognised in Britain as a civil partnership.
