Changing Hearts, Opening Minds
The 2009 conference, which will be held on Saturday 14th November 2009, at West Park Conference Centre, Perth Road, Dundee, 10am-4pm. This conference is organised by the Equality Network with the support of LGBT Youth Scotland and Stonewall Scotland. The keynote speakers are Shona Robison, Minister for Public Health & Sport, and Anne Patrizio, founder of Parents Enquiry Scotland.

Generations Working Together is embarking on a major exercise to collect examples of interesting and good intergenerational practice from across Scotland. As part of its Ageing & Social Cohesion programme, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (CGF) is looking to award 20 projects up to £30,000 each to develop intergenerational pilot projects seeking to "Address a 21st Century Challenge". This stream of funding is looking to support projects that aim to improve social cohesion through three key strands; Environment, Migration and Intercultural issues, and Isolation and Loneliness. Family Planning Clinic: abortion rights for Northern Ireland
The FPA has put forward a
petition to Prime Minister to support women in Northern Ireland. The 1967 Abortion Act does not apply to Northern Ireland, and most
women in Northern Ireland who need an abortion, which could be covered by the NHS if they lived in England, Scotland, or Wales, must travel to the mainland UK and then pay up to £2500 for a private abortion.

Glasgow: 2009 Scottish Sleepout
Positive Action in Housing and Student Action for Refugees announce the 2009 Scottish Sleepout to raise money for the Lifeline Project, which provides food, shelter and practical support to destitute asylum seekers in Glasgow. Several locations, including Glasgow, Dundee and St Andrews on
Thursday 12 November 2009 from 8pm until sunrise (about 7am on Friday).
Glasgow: Brian's Big Debate
Friday, 13th November, 12:30 for 13:15-14:00. BBC Scotland, Pacific Quay, Glasgow. BBC Scotland's Political Editor, Brian Taylor, chairs weekly live radio show. This will be a
post Glasgow North East by-election programme where Brian will be joined by guests discussing that as well as the week's big news stories. Questions can be emailed to brian@bbc.co.uk - the more succinct, the more chance of being picked.
The panellists are: Paul McNamee - Editor of the Big Issue in Scotland; Wendy Alexander - Labour MSP; Dr Peter Hughes - Chief Executive, Scottish Engineering; Sarah Oates - Professor of Politics, Glasgow University; and Patrick Harvie - Scottish Green Party MSP.

Glasgow: Eggheads
12 Yard Productions are looking for vibrant and diverse teams to take part in the BBC2 Quiz Show Eggheads. Each team will consist of at least 6 people. This is the first time that Eggheads has been produced and filmed in Glasgow at BBC Scotland. Currently they will be auditioning in Glasgow next week. Informal time for tea and refreshments followed by a time of quiet reflection from 5pm to remember all those lost to transphobic hate crime and those who cannot live openly in their gender identity.

London cross-arts festival, a platform for LGBT and queer artists, organisations and venues to promote LGBT and queer arts. Organised by arts charity Wise Thoughts, GFest features queer artists and talent across the arts, including visual arts, theatre, dance and performance, LGBT short films, debates, workshops and parties.

US: Doctors say discrimination is bad for health
Earlier this week the American Medical Association voted to oppose bans on same-sex marriage and on GLBT people serving openly in the military. According to the AMA, which is the nation's largest collective of doctors, both bans promote health disparities and interfere with the doctor-patient relationship. (

Uganda: Homophobic and transphobic legislation may pass unopposed
The new bill targets not only LGBT people but any person who "promotes, funds, or sponsors" any LGBT practice or activities: and makes the “failure to disclose” a homosexual within 24 hours by a knowing “authority” an offense punishable by a heavy fine and/or three years imprisonment. (

Davis Mac-Iyalla writes to the Archbishop of Canterbury and primates of the Anglican Communion, calling on them to condemn a bill that "if passed, the new bill will widen the scope, including promoting homosexuality, aiding and abetting homosexuality and keeping a house "for purposes of homosexuality". This means that the relatives and friends of gay couples could face execution if they allow them to stay in their homes." (

Most Anglican primates who oppose "homosexual practice" claim that they do not believe in persecuting gay people. Ekklesia notes that the extent to which these primates speak out on the Ugandan situation is likely to be seen by many as a measure of their sincerity. (

LGBT Families, Civil Partnership and Cohabitation
Islington: mixed-sex couple want civil partnership
Civil servants Tom Freeman and Katherine Doyle intend to give notice at Islington Town Hall of their "intention to form a civil partnership" on 24th November. The couple, who have been together for nearly four years, want the same legal rights as a husband and wife - but they do not want to enter an institution that is closed to same-sex couples. So, in the interests of equality, they are demanding that they be allowed to enter a civil partnership. (

Australia: Territory passes civil partnership laws
The Australian Capital Territory this week passed civil partnership legislation for the second time in three years, granting couples the right to legally binding ceremonies, but the Federal Government will almost certainly veto the changes. The Federal Government confirmed yesterday that such provisions 'undermined and mimicked' marriage had not changed, but would not say whether the new laws would be disallowed by the Rudd government as similiar laws were disallowed in 2006 by the Howard government. France: same-sex couple win right to be adoptive parents
A tribunal has ruled that a woman in Besançon, and her partner of 20 years, should be free to adopt, although the French government has said it is still against the idea. The tribunal overturned an earlier refusal in the couple’s home department, the Jura, which it said could not be legally justified. Although this couple's ten year battle to be considered as a suitable adoptive family has set a French legal precedent, they will still not be allowed to adopt as a couple, as France only permits married couples to adopt jointly. The European Court of Human Rights backed the woman in January 2008. (
