Protest – LGBT human rights in Uganda and Nigeria

7 March 2014 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

An asylum seeker from Uganda covers his face with a paper bag in order to protect his identity as he marches with the LGBT Asylum Support Task Force during the Gay Pride Parade in Boston

On the 24th February Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni signed the Anti-homosexuality bill in to law, similar legislation was signed by Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan in January. The laws stiffen the punishment for homosexuality in those countries, criminalise the promotion of homosexuality and those who do not report LGBT people to the authorities.

Responding to calls by Nigerian and Ugandan activists the Equality Network will be taking part in an international day of action protesting these laws, we have called a protest demonstration to be held at The Mound in Edinburgh on Friday 7th March at noon.

As well as standing shoulder-to-shoulder with LGBT people who have been criminalised in Uganda, Nigeria and around the world we will be calling on the UK Government to take a stand for human rights, recall the High Commissioner to Uganda for consultations, and ensure UK aid is spent ensuring the maximum support for human rights while maintaining the current level of funding.

We ask that for LGBT people in Uganda, Nigeria and those around the world who face oppression, violence and imprisonment that you join us on the 7th.
