Our response to the Church of Scotland on marriage

On 12th September, giving evidence to the Scottish Parliament Equal Opportunities Committee on the marriage bill, the representative of the Church of Scotland, Rev Alan Hamilton, told MSPs that the Church is considering pulling out of providing marriages for mixed-sex couples, because of the bill. He claimed that the Church would otherwise be at risk of legal action forcing them to do same-sex marriages. [Read more…]

England & Wales marriage bill passed by Lords

We’re very happy to report that the marriage bill for England and Wales, the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, was passed yesterday afternoon by the House of Lords, without a vote. It had already been passed by the Commons.

England & Wales marriage bill progresses to final stage

 We’re happy to report that the marriage bill for England and Wales, the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, last night passed its report stage in the House of Lords.

There is just one more stage left – the third reading, next Monday. The bill then returns to the Commons to see if they agree with the Lords’ amendments. [Read more…]

Equal marriage update

On May 28th, the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, Alex Neil, told the Scottish Parliament that the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill will be introduced in the Scottish Parliament before the summer recess. That recess starts on 29th June, so we expect the bill to be published some time next week. He also told the Parliament that he hoped soon to announce a review of the future of civil partnerships in Scotland. [Read more…]

House of Lords rejects bid to block equal marriage in England & Wales

Scottish Parliament equality committee consents to Westminster equal marriage bill

The Scottish Parliament’s Equal Opportunities Committee has this morning given its consent to the Westminster Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill legislating for Scotland in some relatively minor areas of law that are devolved to the Scottish Parliament. [Read more…]

Scottish Government confirm equal marriage bill coming next month
