‘LGBTI People of the Commonwealth’ highlights the challenges facing LGBTI groups in the 53 Commonwealth countries, and their campaign work. The exhibition runs from 23rd July to 1st August in Pride House Glasgow before beginning a tour of Scotland.
The Equality Network welcomes athletes and visitors to the Commonwealth Games. Much of the Commonwealth is not a good place to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex. Due historically to the legal legacy of the British Empire, of the 53 member states of the Commonwealth, 42 criminalise some or all consensual private adult same-sex sexual behaviour. Trans and intersex rights also vary dramatically. Across the Commonwealth, LGBTI people are denied equal access to health services, employment, education, employment, housing and human rights.
‘LGBTI people of the Commonwealth’ is an exhibition which recognises and celebrates the work of LGBTI groups and organisations in the 53 countries that make up the Commonwealth, to raise the visibility of LGBTI people and their lives during the Commonwealth Games and beyond. The exhibition will run at Pride House, 14 Albion St, Glasgow, from 11am on Wednesday 23rd July, through to the evening of Friday 1st August, and will then go on tour to venues around Scotland. Entry to Pride House is free.
