Kinship and Family

‘Family’ and support networks are diverse within the LGBTI+ community. Support comes in a huge range of forms, whether this be emotional, practical, financial, or physical, and it can come from many places, both face-to-face and online. Family can also take many shapes, and for LGBTI+ people, this does not always mean biological family, but can refer to a chosen family of friends, community members, activism groups etc.

Recognising this, and how diverse support structures tend not to be considered in legislation, policies and programmes, the Equality Network is undertaking research into what support means to all of us and what kinship and family look like. In 2022, we published a Scotland-wide survey, publicising this across events, groups, as well as online, and we are currently analysing the results of this. Watch this space!
